Ep 15: Replacing Police with Social Workers
Activists, city leaders, state officials and even the President of the United States have been making calls to defund the police. This idea of defunding the police gained momentum after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota and all yes were on Minneapolis earlier this month as the future of the Minneapolis Police Department was put on the ballot.
The city voted on an amendment that would have replaced the Minneapolis Police Department with a “Public Safety Office.” The idea was to take a portion of public safety dollars from the police department and invest those dollars in “alternatives” to handling domestic violence calls and mental health calls around the community. Ultimately, the amendment was voted down, meaning the Minneapolis Police Department is able to remain as it has always been. However, the topic of defunding the police has not gone away.
